BANK ACCOUNTS
Opening a bank account is not the easiest thing to open here in the UK. You will need as much ID as possible, including your passport, proof of address in the UK (a bill receipt, rent receipts or a lease/contract), and a letter from an employer/job agency. Bank statements and a letter from your bank/s at home may also help.
We can help you with this difficult but very important matter. We can provide you with a personal letter from our company confirming your details and address. In many cases this letter can open all doors for you.
For more information about banks go to page Links section Banks.
NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER
You will need this to work legally in the UK. To get a National Insurance Number you have to call 0845 601 0142 and book an appointment. To do this you need to have your UK home address and your work details. Take your passport, a letter confirming you are employed or registered with an agency and two other pieces of ID. In six to eight weeks you will get your number in the post. You can also go to a Job Centre in your area and speak with somebody in person.
For more information go to page Links section National Insurance Number.
TAX AND REBATES
Anybody working in the UK must pay tax. Rates range from 10% to 40% and everyone has a threshold of 4895 pa. If you have worked less then the full tax year, or have been on an emergency NI number, you may get a refund.
You will need a P45 (when you leave a job) and P60 (at the end of tax year), or a statement of earnings. If you are leaving the UK and do not intend to work again before the end of the financial year, you can claim a rebate during the year - for this you will need to fill out a P85.
For more information go to page Links section Tax and Rebates.
DOCTORS AND HEALTH
For list of GP's in your area call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
Consultations are free. Medicine needs to be paid for, but the contraceptive pill is free. At NHS dentists you will need to pay 75% of the cost of your treatment.

SENDING MONEY HOME
  • Via Bank - Budget for a cost of 10 or more. Priority international payments take one day, but cost much more. An international money order (IMO) starts from 8.
  • Many travel agencies use a service called Moneygram. It currently costs more then banks, but money arrives in 10-15 minutes and there is not usually a receiving charge.
  • You can also send a cheque home for your folks to deposit it into your bank account there.
